Abstract:
Abstract International trade is presently subject to paradoxical and potentially conflicting phenomena. On one hand, is the explosion of regional trade agreements in the wake of the European Union’s 1992 single market initiative, like NAFTA, MERCOSUR and AFTA (Baldwin, 1993). On the other, is the increasing relevance of multi- and bilateral trade arrangements, as evidenced by China’s eagerness to become a World Trade Organization member and the strong advocacy of export-led development by emerging economies.
