Globalisation and the Future of Associational Governance
William D. Coleman
Chapter 20 in The Effectiveness of EU Business Associations, 2002, pp 209-222 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter examines the future of associational governance under the present conditions of economic and political globalisation and the growing internationalisation of policy-making. It begins by reflecting briefly on the meaning of associational governance and what is meant by globalisation. The analysis continues with an assessment of how globalisation is affecting the organisational development of associations. This assessment is based on answering two questions: (i) how is globalisation affecting the membership domains of associations? and (ii) how is it changing the environment in which associations operate? The chapter will then examine how the growing internationalisation of associations’ policy environments is having an effect on how associations function. The chapter concludes by outlining six challenges that associations face, if they are to function effectively in these changed environments.
