Rural Poverty, Women and Indigenous Groups in Latin America
Roberto P. Korzeniewicz
Chapter 3 in Rural Poverty in Latin America, 2000, pp 49-64 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Empirical evidence clearly suggests that rural poverty disproportionately affects indigenous people and women throughout Latin America. However, there is considerable debate on the variables that explain this heightened vulnerability to poverty, as well as on the likely impact of market expansion and/or economic growth on these groups. This chapter reviews the available empirical evidence, analyzes the key debates surrounding the topic and identifies the mechanisms that appear most significant in explaining the phenomenon.
