Chapter 11 in Comparative Political Economy of East and South Asia, 1999, pp 190-193 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In this study of development policy and management in East and South Asia I have adopted the institutionalist approach to examine the political and administrative capability of TW countries. It is a study in the comparative political economy of two regions with distinct historical experiences, cultural influences and different political and economic systems. Their development performance has been compared in that context. In line with the interdisciplinary studies that emerged in the late 1960s, this study takes a broad-based perspective of development. It focuses on both political and economic development with emphasis on values, freedom, quality of life and well-being. It acknowledges such development objectives as goals that TW countries aspire to and concludes that attempts to achieve them will depend on their political and administrative capability.
