The Principles of Leadership

Quinn McCarthy

Chapter 2 in Police Leadership, 2012, pp 21-35 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter will lay the foundation for the CORE Leadership Model: Competency in Leadership, Organizational Climate, Responsibility, and Extending Influence. The Model can serve as the foundation for leadership, but it will not work unless you, the leader, put effort into it. There is no substitute for self-development as a leader. At the same time, random, unconnected development will never be beneficial or constructive. There is always a need for a framework from which to build. Leadership development comes from trial and error. It comes from focusing on character, knowledge, and integrity. More importantly, it comes from adhering to a set of principles that withstand the test of time.
