Abstract: Abstract The notion of knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) was introduced by Miles et al. and defined as “services that involve economic activities which are intended to result in the creation, accumulation or dissemination of knowledge” (1995, p. 18). Given the relevance of this kind of organization, and the prominent role of business services in several industries, a number of definitions followed, such as Bettencourt et al.’s “enterprises whose primary value-added activities consist of the accumulation, creation, or dissemination of knowledge for the purpose of developing a customized service or product solution to satisfy the client’s needs” (2002, pp. 100–1), den Hertog’s “private companies or organizations who rely heavily on professional knowledge, i.e. knowledge of expertise related to a specific (technical) discipline or (technical) functional-domain to supply intermediate products and services that are knowledge based” (2000, p. 505), Smedlund and Toivonen’s “expert companies that provide services to other companies and organizations” (2006, p. 160), or “firms performing, mainly for other firms, services encompassing a high intellectual value-added” (Muller and Zenker, 2001, p. 2).
