Regional Concentration of Mergers and Acquisitions

Aristidis Bitzenis and Pyrros Papadimitriou

Chapter Chapter 7 in Mergers and Acquisitions as the Pillar of Foreign Direct Investment, 2012, pp 99-119 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The topic of foreign direct investment (FDI) has been extensively researched by academics and organizations alike (see inter alia Bitzenis and Papadimitriou, 2011). However, the recent global crisis—initiated by the financial crisis that erupted in the United States and sustained by the sovereign debt crisis of the euro area—may reset the validation and future direction of the literature on FDI. Although the regional triad-based trend (the triad being the United States, the European Union, and Japan) still describes the activity and strategy of multinational enterprises (MNEs) today (Rugman, 2011), the post-crisis recovery in FDI, which is expected to be slow and unevenly spread due to the unstable international business environment (UNCTAD, 2011, xi), shows that sustainable FDI is needed, as markets alone cannot guarantee the sustainability of investment anymore (Onwuamaegbu and Sauvant, 2011).
