The Positive Surplus Hypothesis: Social versus Physical Objectivity
Jean Cartelier
Chapter 8 in Towards a New Understanding of Sraffa, 2014, pp 167-197 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The study of Sraffa’s unpublished papers has revived interest in Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities (PCMC).1 The process of its elaboration is better understood now than before and many efforts have been devoted to its epistemology. An outstanding contribution is that of Kurz and Salvadori (2005) who insist on Sraffa’s objectivism and its evolution after 1931, a crucial year indeed. They show clearly how this evolution is linked with Sraffa’s tâtonnements in his quest for an objective and scientific theory of prices. More recently, John Davis (2012) has extended Kurz and Salvadori’s discussion to philosophy of sciences more generally conceived.
