The Bank Story
Paula M. Rayman
Chapter Chapter Six in Beyond the Bottom Line, 2001, pp 135-158 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract If the employees in the biotech industry have learned how to maintain dignity while walking on Jell-O, the women and men in the banking industry have struggled to learn how to survive rather than sink.1 With constant reengineering and restructuring resulting in massive layoffs, bank employees have had a tough time securing a steady livelihood. With major shifts in the nature of banking and how the work gets done, it has been difficult for employees to maintain pride in their skills and to reap respect from coworkers and supervisors. In a banking culture that primarily has been “mean and lean,” time for family and for social responsibilities has been hard to find.
