The Rise of Island Systems

Christoph Burger and Jens Weinmann

Chapter 3 in The Decentralized Energy Revolution, 2013, pp 64-86 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Any individual’s state of well-being not only depends on his or her mental predisposition and preferences, but also on the contextual — economic, social, even geographical — conditions to achieve happiness in life. Noble prize laureate Amartya Sen calls these “capabilities,” for example the ability to have access to a proper health and education system, or the ability to participate in communal decision processes, from which individuals then have the freedom to choose: “There may indeed be a case for taking incomes, or commodity bundles, or resources more generally, to be of direct interest in judging a person’s advantage, and this may be so for various reasons — not merely for the mental states they may help to generate” (2003, 191).
