Chapter Chapter 4 in Mental Illness at Work, 2014, pp 87-106 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Most people think of addictions primarily in terms of drugs. There is a long list of substances that people can and do become addicted to: alcohol, stimulants (like cocaine), opiates, hallucinogens, marijuana, tobacco and barbiturates. There are fashions in drug abuse that are partly a function of availability. Addiction affects people’s health and lives profoundly. In the workplace, productivity declines and absenteeism goes up.
