Why go to university?

Abstract: Abstract I have been in universities all my adult life. I started out in 1970 at a university that barely makes it into the top 500 in world rankings and have a doctorate from, and lectureship at, ones that are smugly in the top 10 of any of the league tables you can find. I have postgraduate degrees from four universities and have been a full professor for 20 years. I have seen many changes, where benevolent amateurism has been replaced by aggressive and unforgiving managerialism. It’s been a good life; I would do it all again.
