Abstract:
Abstract When employers focus on managing presenteeism as an important part of an organization’s health-care benefits, they can transform employees’ health from a cost burden to a competitive advantage (Hummer et al., 2002). The realization of the high cost of presenteeism has also prompted more and more employers to depend on comprehensive health initiatives to build a successful and productive workforce. This development is exemplified in the case of the U.S. state of Nebraska, which received the 2011 ‘Innovations Award’ from the Council of State Governments (refer to Box 8.1). Nebraska received this award for a breakthrough programme which inspired 18,000 state employees and 6,000 spouses to get active, lose weight and become proactive about preventive care.
