2007: The Year of the Recall

Abstract: Abstract Product recalls are not new or uncommon, but, in an unprecedented way, the year 2007 brought recalls to the top of the agenda for businesses, regulators, consumers, and governments. From the start of the year, manufacturers recalled several products made in China. While it is unfair to say that Chinese manufacturing practices have been mostly responsible for the recent growth in recalls, it is not inaccurate to say that they have made a significant contribution to the spike. Certainly, we can cite several examples of unsafe behaviors during the subject timeframe. Included in this list are products such as pet food, tires, toys, and counterfeit toothpaste. Each one of these categories has a different story, but in nearly every case, the recalls occurred following investigations by unsuspecting customers who examined the products and reported an issue to the authorities. In some sense, the seeds of the 2007 recall wave took root in Panama.
