Location Determinants of Polish Outward Foreign Direct Investment and the Impact of the Global Crisis

Aleksandra Wąsowska and Krzysztof Obtój

Chapter 10 in Emerging Economies and Firms in the Global Crisis, 2013, pp 240-258 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter focuses on the patterns of Polish outward foreign direct investment (FDI). In particular, it explores the host-country-specific determinants of Polish outward FDI. The research is motivated by the need to test the extent to which the mainstream theoretical explanations of FDI from developed countries are useful also in addressing and explaining the FDI motives from Poland, one of the emerging economies of Central Europe. Given that the most important determinants of FDI are economic factors (Buckley et ah, 2007; Sauvant et ah, 2010), we decided to test whether the crisis that hit the global economy in 2008 and the worsening economic situation that followed have had any significant impact on the strategic decisions of Polish investors.
