Chapter 5 in Poverty and Exclusion of Minorities in China and India, 2013, pp 147-170 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In Chapters 3 and 4, we discussed the economic and social welfare of ethnic minorities and deprived castes in China and India. We found that, generally, minorities were poorer. In this chapter, we examine whether among the minority groups, minority migrants who move from rural to urban areas, are poorer or better off than the urban residents. Also, we explore whether income inequality is more or less pronounced among minority migrants than among urban residents. Third, the chapter attempts to determine whether rural-to-urban migration in China and India is a means of alleviating poverty. However, before discussing these issues, we briefly outline the extent of minority migrations between different regions of China and India.
