Abstract Today the limited partnership structure is virtually synonymous with the modern private equity industry, yet similar partnership structures, based on the Code of Justinian, the pre-Islamic longdistance caravan trade in the Arabian Peninsula or the medieval commenda were repeatedly used in history to solve the same combination of challenges.
