Xinjiang

Rongxing Guo ()

A chapter in Regional China, 2013, pp 318-328 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is in the PRC. It is a large, sparsely populated area (comparable in size to Iran) which takes up about one-sixth of the country’s territory. It borders Tibet Autonomous Region and India’s Leh District to the south, and Qinghai and Gansu provinces to the southeast. The region shares a 5,000 km land border with eight countries (including Mongolia to the northeast, Russia to the north and Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to the west). The name “Xinjiang”, which was first given to it during the Qing Dynasty (AD 1644–1911), literally means “new frontier/territory”. It has the abbreviated name “Jiang”.
