Abstract: Abstract In 2009, IBM announced that a large number of employees in North America would be laid off. The company softened the blow of being unemployed in the midst of a desperate job market by offering the employees who had been “satisfactory performers” comparable jobs at IBM in India, as well as several other countries, if they were “willing to work on local terms and conditions.” It was estimated at the time that IBM had laid off about four thousand workers in the United States since the beginning of 2009, and they were simultaneously hiring workers in India. Those who accepted the pay cut probably found to their surprise that IBM already had more employees in India than they had in the United States.1
