Symbiotic Innovation: Getting the Most Out of Collaboration

Robert J. Thomas and Yoram (Jerry) Wind

Chapter 1 in Evolution of Innovation Management, 2013, pp 1-31 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract During 2010 and 2011, IBM conducted research globally on the challenges facing over 3000 chief executives and chief marketing officers. The main finding of these studies was that these leaders believed themselves to be in a world that was substantially more volatile, uncertain, and complex than anything they had seen before (IBM, 2010, 2011). This finding was somewhat expected; what was surprising was that these executives revealed they were not at all prepared to cope with this rapidly changing environment. The study concluded that to make any progress whatsoever, a new kind of creative leadership was needed to develop breakthrough thinking that encouraged experimentation and innovation.
