Abstract: Abstract In the study of university-firm alliances for organizational learning and new knowledge development, researchers have mainly focused on the issues of the facilitating factors of university-firm alliances (Geisler 1995; Cassiman & Veugelers 2002; Santoro & Chakrabarti 2002; Tether 2002; Fontana et al. 2006). Preceding studies focused on finding structural or firm-level contingencies for preferring university partners over private-firm partners in forming external research and development (R&D) alliances (Teece 1985; Kogut 1988; Rosenberg & Nelson 1994; Berkovitz & Feldman 2005; Cassiman et al. 2005; Oh 2010); the role of the government policies in galvanizing alliance formations between firms and universities (Capron & Cincera 2003; Mohnen & Hoareau 2003; Eom & Lee 2010); and developing the legal and governance framework for such alliances (Cassiman & Veugelers 2002; Cassiman et al. 2005).
