Abstract: Abstract This chapter is an attempt to understand how the concept of leadership as prevalent in Indian society is affected by the social context. The context of society can be explained as the social, economic or political structure of a society that has a role in formulating the concept of its leaders over the ages. Some of the questions to be examined are as follows. How has this concept of leadership grown through the ages? Which are the factors that have affected its growth and have finally shaped its current status? It is the understanding of context and its impact that will provide us the key to realizing the uniqueness of the concept of leadership in India.
