The Political Economy Factor in Comparative Economic Development

Anthony Elson

Chapter Chapter 8 in Globalization and Development, 2013, pp 139-159 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter considers the role of political forces in determining economic policy choices, as well as the nature of political regimes and their impact on economic development, as key determinants of the divergent development outcomes of East Asia and Latin America. The chapter concludes with some reflections on the role of the state in economic development and on how academic and policy views on that role have changed recently, largely in the light of the experience of East Asia and Latin America.
