Chapter 5 in India’s Reluctant Urbanization, 2015, pp 153-173 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The living environment is defined here as an assembly of the natural and built environment which is offered to the inhabitants of the place who perform various kinds of social, cultural, religious, economic, and political activities which induce peculiarities in the character of the living environment. Hence, “living environment” is created by combining the influence of these activities and is constantly undergoing change due to the continual evolution of these interlinked activities happening over time and space. It is worth noting that changes in the living environment of metropolitan cities happen due to a rapidly evolving economic environment, which is followed by influx of population, hybridization of culture, and change in the social and political environment as well. Various chapters in this book discuss aspects of the physical built environment, the natural environment, the productive or economic environment, and the governing environment, which together constitute the living environment. In addition to that, this chapter covers the qualitative aspects associated with the “livability” and “quality of life” of urban areas.
