Abstract If there is a living symbol of the revival of German industry, it may be Norbert Reithofer, the chief executive of BMW In the 1980s, when he was a recent university graduate, and a junior professor of manufacturing science at a technical university in Munich, Reithofer wrote a book—still in print—that could serve as a manifesto for the German economy today.1
