The Eight Bases of Power

Eric Bolland

Chapter Chapter 3 in Clout, 2014, pp 55-78 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract For T. E. Lawrence there were the Seven Pillars of Wisdom. The pillars are biblical ways to wisdom. For us, there are the Eight Bases of Power. These are the ways to influence organizations. There are a number of ways in which power can be used to exert influence. That influence can be for staying the course of an organization or for organizational change. In this chapter, the eight bases will be explicated. The source of these bases comes partly from the work of others but mainly from my own study of power in different organizations over a 30-year span.
