Chapter 5 in International Partnership in Russia, 2014, pp 182-205 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In the previous two chapters we examined case studies of joint ventures during the 1990s and then carried out a statistical analysis of the results of a survey of foreign participants in partnerships in Russia in the period 1990–2003. Both elements of the research have revealed that acquisition of knowledge is a competitive process within the relationship between the foreign and domestic partner, and that from a foreign partner perspective the acquisition of local knowledge concerning how to conduct business in Russia is a key driver of his potential success. Both the case studies and the statistics also suggested that the form of the partnership could be a further crucial element, with a corporate structure offering the potential to more closely align the interests of the partners and thus remove some of the competitive pressure between them, leading to greater success.
