Introduction—What Kind of an Asset Is Human Capital, How Should It Be Measured, and in What Markets?

Meir Russ

A chapter in Management, Valuation, and Risk for Human Capital and Human Assets, 2014, pp 1-33 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The effective employment and deployment of intellectual capital and human assets in organizations is widely recognized as a critical characteristic of successful economies and establishments. Their abilities to respond to changing environments, to “learn,” and to be efficient and competitive all depend, to some extent, on the individuals within their boundaries. The leading and management of those individuals in a way that is consistent with the goals and policies of the organization creates value for it and results in the developement of human capital as an asset, which is the focus of this book. Many organizations and their executives realize that the most critical (if not the only) source of competencies, capabilities, and sustainable competitive advantage is having the ability to attract, retain, develop, and manage their human assets and talent.
