Abstract:
Abstract We have become familiar over recent decades with the power wielded by those popularly (or perhaps unpopularly) known as the media barons — those who control the press and broadcast media. We are now adjusting to the development of new forms of media, the internet, social media and electronic communications more generally, and the huge influence that they wield over individual lives and social organisation. The power of those who own and direct these media of communication, old and new — not least over the political debate — is immense. The fact that much of what is generally known as ‘the media’ is in the hands of the same people who dominate the global economy and who have sidelined democracy is, and should be, of great concern.
