The European Directive to Consume
Carl Packman
Chapter 3 in Payday Lending: Global Growth of the High-Cost Credit Market, 2014, pp 55-72 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract The chapter on Europe looks at the European laws regulating consumer credit and the notion of overindebtedness that raised public consciousness around the effects of debt, and addresses the existence of high-cost credit across the union member states. It looks at the part that usury laws have played in resistance to payday lending, specific countries that have had a high presence ofpredatory companies, specific measures as well as European-wide measures to deal with overindebted populations, andfinally the supply of alternative finance.
