Chapter Chapter 13 in The Changing Face of American Banking, 2014, pp 211-215 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This final chapter offers some thoughts on a few of the likely changes for the banking sector that lie ahead and how these will affect future banking regulations and the nature of banks themselves. The trend toward greater consolidation as a result of getting rid of branching restrictions, which enables banks to benefit from economies of scale and economies of scope, is ongoing. The number of commercial banks in the country has dropped every single year since 1984. Technologies like the ATM, smartphones, and the Internet have also reduced the need for full-fledged branches, so branch growth is slowing down at the same time.
