Chapter Chapter 3 in The Changing Face of American Banking, 2014, pp 21-34 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract New York and California are the two big economic powerhouses on the East and the West Coasts and have been trailblazers in the field of banking. Some of the country’s first banks were chartered in New York, and the state is also home to some of the oldest continually operating banks. California, on the other hand, was the first state to permit unrestricted branching throughout the state. It created a truly competitive and well-regulated statewide banking sector in the process.
