Abstract:
Abstract In the winter of 2012, Egyptian strawberries suddenly appeared for sale in supermarkets across Hong Kong, replacing the usual American varieties. Egypt isn’t the first place I think of when looking to buy strawberries, so I was naturally struck by their appearance. By chance, I had previously met with a veteran farm manager working for Driscoll’s, an American producer of fresh berries and the largest supplier of strawberries globally, while visiting a private farm in southern Guangdong province. I asked about the change as we stood on the roof of the management building to get a better view of the farm’s hothouses.
