Sara Chin’s Story: The Accidental Leader

Jane Horan

Chapter Chapter 5 in How Asian Women Lead, 2014, pp 59-70 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Ms. Sara Chin is a tall Singaporean business leader in her midforties with a strong voice and humble spirit. She studied chemical engineering and began her career in consumer products, at the right time at the right place, and she never looked back. Her career and the list of her life achievements are humbling. She moved steadily to leadership roles, and at the outset was offered new opportunities every other year. She attributes her success to hard work and making a choice to become a leader. Ms. Chin started her career in sales and worked her way up the corporate ladder, remaining with the same company for over 18 years. Ms. Chin has achieved many firsts: the first managing director of a global firm, the first woman on a corporate board, and other milestones, but she doesn’t place much emphasis on them. She leads a multimillion dollar function, sits on prominent boards, participates in community events, and is an active mother and accomplished athlete. Ms. Chin is a leader with quick eyes and a hearty laugh.
