Chapter 4 in Cluster-Based Industrial Development, 2014, pp 61-81 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Micro and small enterprises are widely recognized as a major source of employment and income in developing countries. If they grow in size, they would contribute more to economic growth and poverty reduction. In reality, however, their productivity remains low and their sizes remain small (e.g., Mead and Lieadholm, 1998; Tybout, 2000). While their low performances may be attributed to the unfavorable circumstances surrounding them, recent empirical studies have identified problems within firms, especially problems regarding management (e.g., Bloom et al., 2010; Bruhn et al., 2010; Sonobe et al., 2011).
