Spillover Effects of Management Training in a Garment Cluster in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Chapter 8 in Cluster-Based Industrial Development, 2014, pp 157-195 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In Tanzania, we conducted a new round of surveys of garment enterprises in March 2012. Although these enterprises are located in Dar es Salaam, they are not geographically as concentrated as in other clusters. We refer to this survey as the third follow-up survey because we conducted the first follow-up survey earlier in September 2010 after the classroom training program was completed and the second follow-up survey in March 2011 after the on-site training was completed. In this chapter, we report two sets of analyses on the impacts of the training programs on the management practices and business performance of the training participants: the first concerns knowledge spillovers and the second, the gender difference in training impacts.
