Abstract:
Abstract We appreciate the story that Jim Collins tells about why he wrote Good to Great. That book was inspired by questions he kept getting from senior managers interested in companies that performed well over time. Those managers did not work for perennial performers described in Built to Last but for companies trying to make the transition. Hence the title “Good to Great” as a study of a few companies that became great performers. One particular aspect of the story told by Collins was his desire to avoid stating, “it was the leadership,” which enabled good companies to become great ones. Why? As Collins wrote, “so that we could avoid the simplistic ‘credit the leader’ or ‘blame the leader’ thinking common to day.”1
