Chapter 8 in Economic Integration in Asia: Towards the Delineation of a Sustainable Path, 2014, pp 141-164 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter studies the impact of non-tariff barriers (NTBs) on exports from China to 14 countries of the European Union (EU) from 1999 to 2010. The empirical results indicate that the NTBs in the EU market have dual effects on China’s exports. The NTBs have no significant impact on overall exports. Nevertheless, the NTBs create both positive and negative impacts, depending on the different categories of products exported. In addition, the sanitary and phytosanitary measures tend to hamper overall exports, whereas the technical barriers to trade (TBTs) tend to encourage overall exports.
