The Challenges Japan Faced with Its Banking Industry

Dimitris N. Chorafas

Chapter 11 in Banks, Bankers, and Bankruptcies under Crisis, 2014, pp 217-234 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract After the creation of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), in 1955, Japan’s iron triangle of party bosses, bureaucrats, and business magnates promoted a breakneck growth of the nation’s economy, including international expansion. The pros say that this race to riches distributed its fruits equitably: Cheap finance for big business, Massive contracts for construction and manufacturing companies, Plenty of jobs for the masses, Subsidies for farmers including “Sunday farmers,”1 and All the grease the LDP machine needed for reelection.
