Abstract: Abstract The courage to speak a necessary truth so as to inspire people and motivate change is not exclusive to those who live as they preach. Is it more important to reveal the personal nature of the hypocrite or benefit from the value of the message? Perhaps this type of complex and contradictory personality harbors the attributes necessary for initiating transformation. The famous writer Simone de Beauvoir, in her 1953 book The Second Sex, attracted world-wide attention for insisting that women must pursue equality in all areas of their lives. Beauvoir went further to declare marriage an outmoded institution that has no place in our time of emancipation. Yet, Beauvoir’s personal life was the exact opposite of what she publically promoted. She spent her days blindly worshipping Jean-Paul Sartre, the French writer—philosopher, the only Nobel Prize–nominee who voluntarily declined to accept it, diminishing her own accomplishments next to those of a man she considered an absolute genius. Ironically, the woman who had sparked the fire of feminism in the hearts of millions of women was herself unable to live up to her own ideal.1
