Encouraging

Mark W. Mccloskey

Chapter Chapter 22 in Learning Leadership in a Changing World, 2014, pp 239-247 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The wilderness journey takes its toll. The way to the future is longer and more difficult than most imagine. Adversity and disappointment are the order of the day. Progress is not inevitable. Every step is contested as stubborn problems and intractable dilemmas bar the way. Leaders and member-leaders battle frustration, setbacks, and, at times, one another. Too often, there is too little to show for too much effort. Moreover, things get worse. At the first signs of difficulty or delay, the naysayers roll into high gear. Morale suffers. Some grow weary and lose heart, forgetting why they began the journey. The momentum-killers, fatigue and cynicism, erode the will to continue. Many complain. Some despair. Pessimism spreads. Quitting—surrender to the status quo— becomes an attractive option. However, the journey must continue. Encouraging is the leadership work of strengthening one another to continue the journey to the future.
