A chapter in A Practical Guide to Corporate Finance, 2015, pp 1-7 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract When the average man in the street hears people talking about finance, a stream of mental images immediately forms in his head. He sees sad, grey senior executives with a calculator where their heart should be, or frenzied stock market investors staring at multiple green screens, desperate to get their information fix, investors who—he believes—are making oodles of money. So what is finance really? A cold, rational, perfectly modelled science, while the world around us is dripping with uncertainty? Or, on the contrary, does the term finance cover an array of tips and tricks, midway between plumbing (accounting) and psychic divination? Is it a set of beliefs as intangible as (speculative) bubbles? Conclusion: we really need to define what finance is.
