Chapter 1 in Product Development Strategy, 2015, pp 1-14 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Recently product development topics have become attractive to academics as well as practitioners in the field of strategic management. This book focuses mainly on product development strategy in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It provides a theoretical discussion, as well as empirical results, of the factors associated with product development strategy. This chapter introduces the research topic and the areas it covers in management and business. It outlines the research background and rationale of the study and covers a broad range of literature on product development strategy, innovation capacity and firm entrepreneurial performance theories and concepts. The objective of the study and the research questions are also stated, with some suggestions on how these might cover the gap in the literature reviewed and previous studies, enabling the research questions to be answered. This chapter reviews the methodology and the research design, and briefly describes the outline of the survey. Finally, the chapter ends by explaining the structure of the book.
