Chapter Chapter 3 in Transformative Entrepreneurs, 2012, pp 43-60 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Horatio Alger, Jr. stories of the late nineteenth-century tell of city boys who came from poverty and successfully rose to create significant personal wealth through honest hard work, courage, and integrity, going “from rags to riches.” It is a popular notion that this opportunity is available to anyone in America, and numerous examples point to such success, including many discussed in this book. Like Christo, Disney, and Hefner, most entrepreneurs come from humble backgrounds and have little to lose if their ventures fail. But, what if you have a lot to lose? What if you come from a well-to-do family and do not have to work hard, take risks, or develop new ideas in order to prosper? Would you wager your birthright on the chance to turn your dream into reality?
