Chapter 6 in Innovation and the Multinational Firm: Perspectives on Foreign Subsidiaries and Host Locations, 2015, pp 124-132 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter summarizes the most relevant arguments developed in this book. Starting from the acknowledgment of the persistent importance of geographical proximity, particularly for innovation-related matters, it explains why R&D internationalization and, in turn, the geography of international innovation, is a relevant research topic despite the seemingly limited magnitude of this phenomenon. It emphasizes the importance of conceptualizing subsidiaries as strategizing actors in the management of local technological resources and host locations as contexts that actively affect the dynamics of MNC decentralized innovation processes. Finally, it reviews the features of the proposed multilevel analytical framework reconciling IB, IS and EG perspectives, and discusses the potential avenues for new theoretical and empirical research.
