Chapter 2 in British Nationalisation 1945–1973, 1973, pp 19-36 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract In July 1945 a Labour Government took office for the first time with a parliamentary majority. Nationalisation of the mines became inevitable. For a generation this industry had been the subject of bitter political controversy, and in the moment of victory Labour naturally declared that it would carry out the policy it had advocated since 1919.
