Chapter 12 in The Economics of Residential Location, 1973, pp 196-217 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The theory used in earlier chapters in the description and analysis of patterns of residential location was based on the simplifying assumption that each city had one single central workplace. But, as Harris and Ullman (1945) point out, ‘in many cities the land-use pattern is built not around a single center but around several discrete nuclei’. In this chapter and the next the theory will be elaborated to take into account the existence of these ‘multiple nuclei’, and the predictions of the theory will be tested against empirical evidence.
