Chapter 2 in The Economics of Residential Location, 1973, pp 14-29 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract In this chapter we cover some of the preliminary work necessary for the development of the theory. In the first part of the chapter we state some of the limitations of the theory; the rest of the chapter is used to state assumptions and to define terms. For some of the assumptions it is argued that they are at least an approximation to reality. For others, it is argued that they may be more realistic in the case of some cities than others but that it is necessary to make the assumptions explicit to understand both the limitations of the theory, and if possible, the way in which the predictions of the theory would change if different assumptions were made.
