Strategies for Economic Development (I)

Amlan Datta

Chapter Chapter VIII in Perspectives of Economic Development, 1973, pp 97-118 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Some economists have made a plea for ‘unbalanced’ economic growth. They are not all agreed on the kind of imbalance they recommend, but their arguments are interesting and shoule receive some attention. A. O. Hirschman’s The Strategy of Economic Development (Yale University Press, 1958) can be taken as a good example. Hirschman’s ideas changed somewhat later on; but we are not interested so much in the evolution of his thought as in a clear example of a plea for unbalanced development.
