A Decade of Agricultural Development in Tanzania and Kenya

Hans Ruthenberg

A chapter in Accelerated Development in Southern Africa, 1974, pp 279-292 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Between 1965 and 1970, available estimates indicate that agricultural production in Tanzania and Kenya, measured in constant prices, increased by rates of 3.6 and 4.7 per cent respectively (see Table 5.1). Many schemes failed and many more succeeded, but particular and overall development targets were not fully attained. The record is nevertheless remarkable if compared (a) with other African countries; (b) with the expectations of many observers in the early 1960s; (c) with the problems of independence and Africanisation.
